AOL will be added after the close, but managers must have the stock in their portfolios beforehand. This is why, for example, a Vanguard index manager said recently that he will be buying AOL en masse beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

Whatever AOL is selling for then, he has to buy. Period. The bottom line is that his portfolio must match the S&P 500 precisely.
