It's that simple only if your holding is a single lot (i.e. each share has the same cost basis). If your holding is multiple lots with different cost bases per share, then the cost basis is adjusted lot by lot. As long as you receive whole shares for each share held, things are straightforward. But fractional share splits make things complicated.
