I believe the Linux desktop offerings are immature and difficult to use for the joeschmoe user. I see potential in KDE. Need to look at Gnome. At least one of these two will provide the foundation needed for the future. I look for desktop penetration to capture credible market share by end of 2000.

All in all I think Corel is one year too early with this effort, but hopefully they will prove me wrong or have the staying power to keep the product line going through 2000.

Is Linux desktop DOA?

zdnet.com

Thanks for the link.
I think the article is wrong on two points.
1. Linux assault on the desktop market hasn't even started yet. All the noise from Corel is just dead cat bounces.
2. The author considers US market only where Windows has deeply entrenched itself. Situation is much different in developing countries. Computers just started coming to schools and families, and they are less powerful than in the US. People in those countries have to look for something more efficient than Windows.Recent decision by Mexican government to install 100,000 Linuxs in schools is a good example.
Even in Europe people are more likely to look for alternatives to Windows than in the US.
