It something is down 100%, it is at zero. If it is up 100%, it has doubled. If your investment is up 500%, and then it loses 20%, then you are up 400% overall. If you are up 500%, and then it loses 100%, you have a bunch of stock certificates to use as placemats, or otherwise.
