To even think of calling AMZN, SEEK, YHOO, even AOL, "blue chips" in the same league as MSFT is silly. AMZN has never seen a profitable quarter, YHOO just a couple of them, and AOL is trading at 300+ PE. MSFT is a real company, with huge profits, market leadership (in markets with high barriers to entry). The other stocks you mention get a lot of attention and speculation, but are definitely not "blue chip" securities.

An interesting problem with the portal companies having incredible valuations--it makes them to expensive to be candidates for acquisition. It may actually be in the interest of their core shareholders to drive the price down.

Any thoughts?

Jan: Happy New Year to you too. I was reading an interview with a higher up of MSN and it mentioned the prospects of MSFT buying a portal. The VP of MSN said that the portal would really have to be unlike a run-of-the-mill portal and more along the lines of a "new technology" a la hotmail and linkexchange.

Take care.
