This is basically correct, but you left out an important point.
Not only does the new Oracle architecture make it possible to
centralize applications with the data, which greatly simplifies
a lot of administration, it is all based on open standards which
makes it possible for 3rd parties to add value in ways that they
are frequently reluctant to attempt when MSFT is driving (having
once worked at a company that was on the receiving end of MSFT's
"interest in our forthcoming product", I think that this reluctance
is justified).

Yes, MSFT will come late to the party, and if history is any
indication they will be obnoxious, order off the menu, insult the
other people at their table, and try to buy the restaurant so that
they can avoid leaving a tip.

Conforming to open standards is not really that easy given their
business model, since they have to compete all the time on a level
playing field, and this makes it hard for them to get their 50%
margins...
