AT&T, Time Warner May Unveil Venture in January, USA Today Says

Washington, Dec. 31 (Bloomberg) -- An AT&T Corp. and Time Warner Inc. joint venture agreement that would allow the phone giant to use Time Warner's cable lines to provide Internet access could be announced as early as mid-January, USA Today said, citing Gartner Group research director Eric Paulak and Lehman Bros. telecommunications analyst Blake Bath. Under the accord, AT&T would pay most of the costs associated with upgrading the Time Warner cable network to support voice transmission and high- speed Internet access, the newspaper said. AT&T is also looking for other joint ventures with cable firms, and USA Today said the company is expected to enter new ventures or acquisition talks with other cable operators after the Time Warner deal is announced.

Yesterday, AT&T's $54 billion purchase of Tele- Communications Inc. won approval from federal regulators after the companies agreed to sell TCI's stake in Sprint PCS, a wireless telephone joint venture.
