I see the European Union as one nation in many respects. A looser union than the US but on its way in that direction. The main barrier to integration is language. I have a European Union passport and could live and work ( supposing I could get a job instead I am in Australia - happen to be an Aussie citizen too) , claim government benefits, vote for the Federal Parliament etc. in any European Union country.

IMO the Euro will work exactly as its proponents intended. That the inevitable crises will be met by more integration not less. For investors the question is whether the European commission and Central Bank will overide the Maastricht conditions and allow France, Germany etc. to raise debt resulting in the Euro being a weak currency not the prospect of countries quitting.
