Your subjective opinion is that your causes are worthy, and as you say, pretending otherwise would be dishonest and silly. However, your original statement to Bill implied that your causes were objectively worthy, and that the only reason he (or anyone) would not support them is that they are "selfish." This ignores the fact that other people have their own subjective opinions that are no less valid than yours.
