Bob,

I love this thread. First we have Randy The Steer easily outperforming the market; then we have the brilliant academicians at Third Ave. Funds telling us that index funds are no damn good when personal experience, Bob Brinker and probably Randy The Steer are telling us otherwise. Leads me to believe that Randy The Steer and the brilliant academicians are using essentially the same tools in their work

I love this thread too. Ha!

I think it is VERY important to point out that Third Avenue and others are making the point that if you choose to research your own equity picks that over time (10 yrs.) you can do better than the index. This DOESN'T mean people shouldn't index.

Buffett, whose investment style Whitman follows (both of which are derived from Fisher and Graham) has said that if you have no interest in researching your own investments you would be better off owning an index fund. This is a powerful statement coming from a gentlemen who has a record that is phenomenal.

IMHO, a person can't do anything but grow rich if they utilize the public information Buffett and Brinker have provided. They are two special human beings in addition to having INCREDIBLE investment minds.
