I agree the spamful idiot ones are bad. But I think that even though SI is the best it is in a decline in that the rate of recruitment has fallen dramatically.
There is a tradeoff, free versus ads.
Some people tune out the ads and use the free services. What I especially dislike is the small amount of screen content versus ad content and you are forced through several screen to read the same amount of text that SI places on one screen. Long posts often take 2-3 screenloads. SI you scroll down.

It is similar to the public TV versus commercial TV situation. Much of the good stuff has low mass appeal.
On boards like this all the players are above the masses that watch the commercial crap, same on the raging bull and bull boards and the numerous other venues.
In a way is is greshams law in operation, "bad money forces out good", in this case bad content forces out good.

One thing, how does SI intend to deal with us old boys who were grandfathered forever free status if we are the only ones left as the ad based stuff keeps getting more and more features.

Sorry to hear about Jill getting threats. She seemed always to be very reasonable. She chided me a few times for my literate attacks on others, but still gave me a bunch of free tee shirts anyway.
I hope she lives well and prospers.
