Borders.com Awarded Top Ratings from Internet
Experts and Users

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Borders.com has garnered top rankings from Internet experts and users in
recent surveys of the web's best sites.

Gomez Advisors rated Borders.com as number one out of 19 sites surveyed in the area of ''relationship services'', specifically
recognizing Borders.com's ability to foster customer relationships in an electronic environment. According to Gomez, the
ranking was based on ''sophistication in interactions and flexibility in service options.'' In that same survey, Borders.com
ranked better than its main competitors on overall pricing to consumers.

In addition, Borders.com was singled out as a ''Best of the Web'' selection in the fall edition of Money.com magazine. In
making this choice, Money.com noted ''Borders gives Amazon.com a run for its money in aesthetics, choices and timeliness.''

Most recently, Borders was ranked number one in a survey of web users on PlanetClick.com, a new site which publishes
Internet rankings based solely on user preferences. In the bookselling category, Borders.com topped over 200 other sites.

According to Philip M. Pfeffer, the newly-appointed chief executive officer of Borders Group, Inc. (NYSE: BGP - news),
these recent top rankings reflect the differentiated features Borders.com offers customers, including:

The only major site in its category with comprehensive in-stock inventory assortments in books, music and video, all
housed in its state-of- the art fulfillment center. The fulfillment center, specifically designed to support Borders' electronic
commerce, carries over 650,000 titles and 10 million books, music CDs and videos ready for immediate shipment. This
translates into better selection and faster delivery to customers.
The deepest site directory on the web in books, music and video, with more subjects and features (numbering in the
hundreds) available online than any other competitor.
The most unique title features on the web -- nearly 3,000 -- most of which are available at significant discounts.
The best assortment of bargain titles, with hundreds of hand-picked selections available at discounts of up to 80 percent
every day.
Thousands of exclusive ''essentials'' lists assembled by expert buyers.
Expert recommendations from Borders' highly-regarded merchandising staff.
Industry-leading chat and community services via a relationship with TalkCity.
Exclusive, personalized out-of-print book search capabilities through a partnership with Harvest Booksearch, the
preeminent out-of-print provider.

''In seven short months online, we have developed a web site that is truly world-class,'' Pfeffer said. ''It is gratifying that
highly-respected rating sources and Internet users consistently rank our site at or near the top.''

Pfeffer noted that with site enhancements made recently, the company ''now has a site that can compete with anybody and we
intend to let the world know.'' He added that developing web-based commerce technologies which ''enhance the customer
experience both in-store and online'' is a key part of the company's strategies. ''I'm looking forward to playing an active role in
this area of our business and I'm excited about the potential of Borders.com,'' Pfeffer concluded.
