fordor:
I do not own a bank stock right now. Have been planning to add one to my portfolio and this looks good. I have lived in California most of the time since 1956 and have seen all the banks good and bad get merged, bought out, taken over, etc. After leaving California in early 94 and returning in early 98 I was shocked to see how few banks
are left. Tried Wells Fargo and left after 1 month. I have been with
Great Western Bank since March and so am now a Washington Mutual customer since they took over Great Western in June.Great Western was always great. I was with them years ago when they were Great Western Savings.
What has occurred in California is anger at banks changing over night and changing culture and policies, charges, fees, etc. If anything, WM is just as warm, friendly and helpful as Great Western. The hours have been extended to 6PM on weekdays, I am still using my old checks.
I refer relatives who don't like their bank after an ownership change to move to WM.
