By year's end, users can expect XML support in applications, authoring tools, and most important, browsers. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) completed several XML specifications in 1998, including the core XML specification, Level 1 of the Document Object Model (DOM), and XML Namespaces. Now, the W3C is pursuing a number of initiatives to round out XML's functionality, and the industry is moving toward a widespread release of XML applications. Most visibly, both Microsoft and Netscape are adding XML and DOM support to their version 5.0 browsers. Browser support is an important milestone for XML's adoption, said Tim Bray, an invited expert to the W3C who has worked on several XML specifications. By the end of this year, "We should have production-quality XML-capable browsers," Bray said. On the authoring side, Macromedia's new Dreamweaver 2.0 includes basic XML support, as will Microsoft's upcoming FrontPage 2000.
