1999 Remote Brokerage Firm Observations:

Most remote brokerage firms are now picking up ECN fees, data fees, and offering commission below $20 per trade. Many firms are also doing away with additional commissions on large orders (5,000/10,000 shares)

Looks like the focus will now turn towards CUSTOMER SERVICE and RELIABILTY as the principle way to rate remote brokers in 1999.

Reliability will continue to be a function of the speed and quality of internet connections. Hopefully DSL and Cable will roll out quickly in 1999!

Customer Service will continue to revolve around:

1) Getting client phone-in orders processed as quickly as possible.

2) Resolving system reliability problems and communicating timelines to clients of system reliability problem resolution.

3) improving client reporting online and through monthly statements.

Look for increased competition from national discount firms as the realize that non-browser based order entry systems are the way to go. As well many firms may be forced to offer ECN order execution rather than simply routing all orders to one of the large market makers in exchange for order flow payment.

No doubt that 1999 will see ECN's begin to dominate trading on NASDAQ.

The futures exchanges will no doubt be moving towards more electronic markets in light of the success of the E-mini.

Here's to a profitable 1999!

Cheers!
