Bell Atlantic, down 3 1/2 at 54

AirTouch Communications, up 3 1/16 at 72 7/16

Already in the midst of a huge merger with GTE, Bell Atlantic is reportedly is nearing a $45 billion takeover of AirTouch, the nation's second-largest cellular phone company. CNBC, citing sources close to the talks, said a deal could be announced as early as next week.

British Petroleum, up 7 9/16 to 90 3/4

Amoco, up 5 1/8 to 59 7/8

The oil companies completed their merger after receiving regulatory approval from the Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday. Shares of the combined company, BP Amoco PLC, will trade under the BPA symbol beginning Monday.

Medtronic, down 1 19/32 at 74 9/32

A report in The Wall Street Journal said the Minneapolis-based medical device maker's core pacemaker business may be deteriorating.

American Coin Merchandising, down 2 11/16 at 5 7/8

The Boulder, Colo.-based coin dealer warned that it will report disappointing results for the fourth quarter. The company said additional costs from changing its product warehousing in the Seattle area will also dampen earnings in 1999.
