Steve - Re: " think if AMD's K8 is faster than Merced at x86, which do you think will be the mainstream processor of choice.. Intel agrees with me, witness their planned extenions to IA32 with follow on chips.. "

Sure they agree - the follow on chips - Coppermine, Cascades, Willammette, Foster don't need the extra IA64 baggage - that would make them too expensive - and limit their x86 speed.

You talk about the K8 as if it were being launched next week - H*LL, the K7 isn't even set for launch for another 6 months !

Re: "The point is Paul, Merced, etc. are a gamble and even Intel isn't putting all their eggs in that basket.. hell they left 95% of the McKinley design to HP just incase it doesn't work."

Steve - what isn't a gamble in this game? Is the MXi a gamble? Is the HallaPeno a gamble?

The McKinley is being jointly designed by Intel and HP - that is why Intel has established a design center in Ft. Collins, Co.

And even if it was 110% designed by HP - who cares? If Intel makes it and blows the doors off NSM and AMD, Intel's money will still be green.
