I wondered about things similar to this - wild price swings in SLB, AN, GE at the close (big, big caps), and I had the sinister thought that maybe portfolio managers were somehow doing their thing end of Q not only to window (un)dress, but to put a little more value in their holdings Q end, thus increase their payouts based on account valuation. JMHO and thoughts.

Ah hah. The stuff that mysteries are made of!

What it does is create one more "new high" for the day. It would be interesting to see if there were other stocks that had similar trades, away from the bid/ask.

Or was it just an aberration?

My cynical thought of course, is that if it was done more than just with NOVL, maybe someone was trying to create the illusion, in spite of the reality, that the market is broadening out.

Yesterday was the best day for "new highs" in the whole move that started in October.

Nothing like calming the fears of the T/A guys who have been worried about bad breadth.

Happy New Year!
