All - A question regarding NT 5 Workstation beta (Win 2000 whatever)

I'm wondering if the beta of NT 5 Workstation is stable enough where I could have it installed as the only OS on my new computer (assuming I can find a builder who would go along with it).

Anyone out there have any hands-on experience with the latest NT 5 Workstation beta?

Emory

To (BLUE) FUNK (whom I guess is BLUE because he couldn't get THROUGH to ComputerNerd USA, Inc.):

Our most sincere apologies, Sir, for your inconvenience. We have posted an announcement on the index pages of most of our various sites including computernerd.com, dudecomputer.com, cool-it-dude.com, et al explaining that we are experiencing explosive demand for our products which has swamped our phone system and exceeded our ability to respond to all of our email. The resultant deterioration in service quality is quite unacceptable and we are taking urgent steps to correct the situation.

Let me take this opportunity to make some observations based on our experience which may be of interest to SI members:

1. In Internet commerce, the adage about the world beating a path to your door in search for your better mousetrap is certainly true. We happen to have developed the world's best CPU coolers for Intel's Celeron processor which permit stable operation at very high clock rates. This gives equivalent performance to Pentium II processors costing hundreds of dollars more, and the effective distribution of this information via the Internet has created explosive demand.

2. Our phone system (until recently only five lines) couldn't possibly handle this demand, but our online ordering system will take an unlimited number of orders 24-hours a day from all over the world. Since we set up a dedicated server to handle this traffic about a month ago, we have gone from a ranking of 50th to 13th at present in the World1000 Computer classification based on average traffic. We have added additional phone lines up to the maximum capacity of our KSU and have tripled our office space and number of employees since Sept. 21st, when we moved into our present larger quarters.

3. Risky you say? Damn right it's risky because what goes up does come down and especially in this business in this world. As FUNK points out, things move FAST in this thread! Intel will bus lock the Celeron and the new Pentium IIs, and will discontinue OEM CPUs without cooling fans except to volume computer builders. Since we are specialized in high-performance coolers, this will definitely impact our business beginning as early at February.

4. Here is our (hitherto secret) next move in this brutal game: We have developed and tested a new active (thermoelectric) cooler for the Celeron 300A which permits stable operation at 504 MHz, giving higher performance than any Intel processor currently on the market. We will sell these in an integrated package guaranteed at 504 MHz with a 3-year replacement warranty for less than $300. Interested SI members are invited to email comments and/or questions regarding this product and our broader marketing strategy to me at ComputerNerd USA, Inc.

Please pardon me, Mr. Funk, for broadening this discussion beyond cutting up credit cards. You needn't have worried about any unauthorized charges, but I'm really sorry you won't have the benefits of one of our coolers for your project.

$2139.76 - Total not including shipping

I am sure this will end up costing me $2500 before its over.

I may choose to consolidate vendors, pay a few $$ more for some parts in order to save on some shipping charges.

The cpu will be OC'd. I already have a modem - 3com ImpactIQ ISDN.

One 10 gig drive will be an NT 5.0 set up with my trading system: Real Tick III, Mirc, Netscape, Excel etc.

The other 10 gig a 98 set up for gaming: ( Unreal, Half-Life, Thief, Trespasser, etc. ) and MP3's and soon digital camera / scanner stuff.

Each hard drive will have identical archive partitions.

Can I configure two hard drives this way and use bios to boot off of either one?

Any input welcomed.
