It is evident that Intel is now in reactive mode of operation rather than proactive

It appears that much Intel's roadmap has been defined by Cyrix and AMD. Socket 370 was the result of K6 and MII keeping socket 7 alive, and the integrated CPU/chipset effort was caused by MediaGX/Mxi/PCOAC.

If AMD can execute with K7 it will be devastating to Intel, because the Xeon business is their last safe haven.
