[am a UNIX Systems Administrator. At work, our Windows NT Administrators have installed SUNW UNIX on their NT machines!!] Happy New Year! Christopher, you have re-assured me about your capabilities. I do not want to appear mean but I do not follow charts. However, I try to listen to professionals who work in the field. [ At work, our Windows NT Administrators have installed SUNW UNIX on their NT machines!!] I've been told over and over again that there will always be a need for a high-end product that supports critical applications. MSFT has not produced such a product. The MSFT anti-trust trial brought to the public's attention that MSFT's NT cannot handle the critical stuff. One example mentioned was Boeing. Boeing could not upgrade to Windows 98(?) because Boeing could not separate the browser from the operating system. And Boeing needs to run UNIX for critical applications. So Boeing is stuck with Windows 95 because NT's MSFT Browser will not run UNIX. The only browser that supports UNIX is NETSCAPE. Sophisticated professionals understand UNIX's importance. Unfortunately, the public does not. They only see Windows on their home PC which, in our experience, crashes quite often. By the way, other companies gave depositions at the MSFT trial. Don't recall who they were though. They said they could not run NT because of Browser problems. And like, Boeing, they needed to rely on Unix for critical applications. And, as I mentioned above, the only browser that supports UNIX is NETSCAPE. [ Linux is gaining popularity as more and more companies are putting it on their NT machines instead of Windows NT. Guess what? Astute SUNW have realized that and made SUNW UNIX to go on NT. Linux simulates UNIX.] I've been told Linux is a variety of Unix. Some companies have no choice but to use Linux because of its cost. My husband's pals in Borneo have turned to Linux because of the Asian crises which has devalued their currency. I'm not sure how Sun could make UNIX go on NT cuz they are TWO completely different operating systems UNLESS: a customer with a Sun Solaris or NT Machine can chose whether he/she wants to run Unix or NT on same machine? So both NT and UNIX would be installed on the same machine. Is that what you mean when you say: [our Windows NT Administrators have installed SUNW UNIX on their NT machines!!] [Who do you think is going to win the battle, Linux or SUNW? I say SUNW.My previous target for SUNW was 100 or 120. It could go a lot higher than that.] I don't know. There may be room for both Linux and Unix. I think Charles made a very good point recently when he said that we may be very surprised when Jeni products pop up in the market place very, very soon! Sun should do well because they are a top-notch company with high-end products that are reliable. And they have good relations with their customers. And the introduction of the Jeni products may push SUNW's stock price higher. By contrast, some companies use Linux because of financial problems. I don't know how high SUNW stock will go but as far as technology goes, it looks like they are on the right track. Thanks for your note! Best wishes, Mephisto
