CMGI,like SFE are basically investors in small tech companies usually in the revenue range of $10-50M.They provide venture capital to grow these companies into larger more profitable companies like Novell and Cambridge(in the case of SFE).Their investment philosophy is longterm. In some cases(LCOS -CMGI)they will give some shares of the IPO's to the shareholders. One of the private investments for SFE(which is ready to takeoff)is Internet Capital Group(ICG),a venture fund comprised of Internet savvy investors such as SFE,CPQ and CMCSA.VERT(VerticalNet will be IPO"d from ICG(backed by SFE)in Feb.I believe that CMGI has at least 3IPO's slated for this year.
