Who will Madera Int be helping by donating 50% of their profits too? Those poor India tribes; AN URGENT APPEAL TO HELP THE AMAZON INDIANS! 2 April 1998 Dear Friends, I'm writing to you on behalf of the Yanomami people. They are the most pure and the most primitive Indians in the world. They are in our days at the Stone Age. They are in danger and need your help. Right now. And you can help them. The Yanomami land is burning in Roraima, Amazon. The fires in Amazon are receiving very good press-coverage and are galvanizing the emotions of everyone in this world able to suffer when the environment is destroyed in such a violent way. But the Yanomami are not receiving any practical help from the very people in charge of the fight against the fires in Amazon. The Yanomami area is too remote, the total area being burned is too big and the firefighters are few and poorly equipped. They are feeling alone in their burning forest, they are seeing the animals that live in their land run away from the approaching flames. They are seeing their rivers drying out due to climate change. The conditions at present are ideal for the spread of malaria - a disease the Yanomami never had before they had contact with white men. At maloca Novo Demini, where 150 Yanomami live, 36 Indians contracted malaria falciparum, the most lethal type of malaria. And 16 of them got malaria vivax. At maloca Papi, where there are 170 Yanomami, 117 Indians are suffering from the disease, where three years ago they hadn't heard of malaria. The chief Jo Davi Yanomami is furious. He told me that even the snakes become crazy because of the fires. They need medicines - at least 10,000 capsules of Mefloquina for malaria and 100 doses of serum antivenin lyophilized polyvalent because as they don't have electricity they can't use serum that there is in Brazil - which must be stored in fridges. Please, send the medicines directly to Distrito Sanit E1rio Yanomami Av. Ene Garcez, 1636 69304-000 Boa Vista - Roraima The Yanomami people are 9,386 Indians divided in 188 communities in an area of 96,649 km of forest. They protect their area against the devastation of the white man. We must help them to save their lives, their culture, their forest. Thank you very much.
