I'm sure they could if you keep paying them a monthly fee for life. Freewwweb is an average of $10 a month for the first year and then NOTHING from then on. I suspect there will be many others that will pop up in this area. Also, cable modem connections will figure in AOL's demise perhaps -- remember, AOL is Compuserve (gg) -- it's all advertising. Maybe I'm missing something, but 90% of the people that are on AOL that I have spoken to, complain about their product. They are apparently using AOL simply because they feel they are not "technical" enough to use another provider. They think AOL is so much simpler. Once everyone figures out that they are not so stupid (that was not "fine print", by the way), perhaps a small fee up front and no monthly fee will appeal over AOL's "pay for life" plan. I use an independent provider, and when my pre-paid year is up, I'm going to give Freewwweb a try.
