AOL 99: KING OR PAUPER? POLL update; 1/31/99 182; 1/1/00 332 Finally, the bears are arriving. Five more polled and the year 2000 estimate is down to 332, far below the near-400 guess of early this week. There are still a ton of longs and bulls on AOL, of course, as the 182 average guess for Jan. 31 is 17% higher than the current 155 1/4. Of course, not all AOL shareholders are in it for life. Some, like Dennis J Baltz , have no desire to start accepting declines. With this spike up to 160 after hours, I was wondering if AOL would Spike up $20 on Monday or Spike down $20. I was wondering if I should just sell at the open and take the $155 and be happy.Jinx3d warned against the perils of in-and-out investing. I think the problem is people see the price movement form day to day. They think hindsight will guide them to profits. It seldom does. In fact most short time traders profits want pay the taxes for most long term investors with the same amount invested. Market timing is a futile exercise.Tunica recently bought AOL and for good reason: AOL will be the cyberspace Costco. The buy of AOL wasn't exactly easy, though.I had to swallow hard to buy the high PE. But as Barron's learned the last 3 years, PEs are meaningless in a world wide of baby-boomers racing to do-it-yourself-e-trade-investing for old age. And finally, the coup de grace: good stocks are never cheap. That said, The Guru 00 asked (Dec. 28) the question many AOL shareholders have in mind: what's next? Is there a nationwide DSL carrier that AOl could afford, or would take AOL inflated stock in return. I ask out of ignorance, not malice. I have no position in AOL. I was short and covered at 47 post split. That small 500 share position (1,000 post) would have cost me over a 100K. whew! Andy , aka Andy Richter, sees AOL's effectiveness in some of the most basic ways. Up close, at that.If you are a kid on-line, you've got to have the AOL, BUDDY LIST. It is the only service that lets you see who of your friends are around to chat. IT ROCKS. David Tesorero may have said it for all, or at least the short-term AOL investors. I hope we don't tank on Monday!! Okay, everyone, I'm putting Mom in the car and we're off to see family. Keep the new and/or rehashed entries coming. Be back late tonight. 1999 2000 Jan31 Jan1250 500 Annette250 540 tang 230 400 Dave Kosmayer 214 400 Bret 210 450 CRICKET 204 260 David Montgomery 200 460 Phillip A.
