Steve,
Surely you don't think punishment is ever better than love, given an equal outcome? If you could tach your children everything neede through unconditional love, would there ever be a reason to punish them? Punishment serves the purpose of either teaching a lesson, or
causing pain for revenge.(I am not even talking about etrnally burning)

Given a choice, would you rather teach your child through love or pain?

Can we still love someone and punish them? Yes. Because we are not capable of constant, unconditional love, we resort to punishment. We have all kinds of stress factors that we deal with, jobs, homes, money, love lifes, etc. god does not have those factors, and never acts in a fashion that is less than optimium.

I did not say that unconditional love wouldn't work in all situations, I said we are incapable of supplying that love. God is not incapable of that.

take the example of the puppy that I gave you. all three examples will work. Which one was best? Obviously the one with love.

There is another way to prove that unconditional love is the only and best way. If you burn eternally, there are no tother options. Just eternal pain and suffering. NO way for future redemption, growth, or love.

Unconditional Love always leave an option for an improvement, an option for growth, an option for the betterment of all concerned. Growth is allowed for and encouraged. Eternal dmnation(torture) is a statement that god knows no toher better way than to inflict punishment. No other way that he can allow for betterment, learning, and growth. Just torture. Sometimes for the mere fact that an otherwise good person didn't acknowledge him by name!

I just want to reiterate that I didn't say that unconditional love doen't always work, that we are just not evolved enough to use the optimum methods, all the time. christianity doesn't allow for God to share the same failing.
