I like AOL too, not just as a stock. I started out buying mutual funds and eventually moved on to individual stocks. I view AOL in the same way. Just as I have hung on to a few funds, I am hanging onto AOL while also having expanded to Mindspring. My kids love AOL and I still use it once in a while but for most purposes (business, investing, etc) I prefer Mindspring. I think most beginners are well served by at least starting with AOL and I think that is what is happening.

Ditto.

I've used AOL for years (4?) and almost dropped it during their problem years. However, when shopping for an alternative, I keep in mind that I have 5 e-mail addresses that will never need to change (4 kids and my wife and I). We can move anywhere and still be connected. My daughters can keep their buddy lists intact (only 70 for the 14 yr old) and all this for only $22/month.

Y'all can use the freebies, I'll pay the little-bitty monthly fee and enjoy the stability and dependability of AOL!

Laura....Thank you!...I couldn't have said it better myself.

And the poster who bought AOL after he saw his friend's daughter with 167(?) friends on her AOL Buddy List----sounds like Peter Lynch, I think, who said one of the best ways to find a good stock to invest in is to pay attention to what all the kids are using.
