hp... re: y2k....
I think it's under control... And what unfolds with the Euro in the coming weeks will be an indication of the success we can expect with the y2k problem..

My personal opinion on y2k.. it that it's under control... business is spending a tremendous $$ this past year and into the next with remediation and upgrades. But life (economic and financial) will continue... and it will be better!!!!!

Most business and all financial institutions have been under pressure of liability and legal suit to get the Y2k problem under control this year. That's a heavy handed way to get the attention of most CEO's and CIO's to get this job done right and on time!!

What may be worse... is not the economic and financial world (where all precautions and system changes are being implemented systematically)... but perhaps the changes that aren't made is some distant transformer... on some damn... in upstate Montana.... that will cause a brownout... to everyone on the west coast for 10 days. (This of course is hypothetical... but the point is... that if we have a problem.... it's not going to be anywhere... where anyone would have expected it!!!); but we will recover... and we will survive... the the capitalists economies will probably even profit from it!.

happy girl,
Let me give you the real reason that the Y2k problem is going to be the biggest farce you will witness in your life time. There will be problems but do not worry one moment about any problem where Big Money Profit or Losses are involved. What was the first big monetary arena to rectify the problem, yes the U.S Stock Exchanges. What was the second, yes Social Security. This kind of rectification is what you will see during the year. Watch how the reports come out and how correlated they are to monies involved. I am not saying that every computerized device is going to work but you can bet the Jets will fly, the major banks will be operating, your phone will work.

The good part about it all is how great the economy will be with everyone having to correct the small crap. so if you want to know if the problem is going to affect you, just calculate the dollars and you will be fine.

From the porch,

Voltaire

happy_girl, there are a number of stocks that have been hit hard as a result of y2k spending - these are the enterprise software stocks, which is appropriate since y2k is an enterprise software sort of thing, well thats what it will displace anyway.

I suggest you chart some of these: psft, vntv, sebl, itwo, sap, orcl, ca. What you will find is that with the exception of orcl (which is sort of a special case) the peak for these was late spring/early summer and most are down 50% from there - reportedly due to y2k.

My point is, if a stock was going to get hit with y2k - I think it would have happened already as it did to these guys.
Michelle

Happy 1999 everybody!
