That's why people get smashed on New Years Eve. Everybody's looking into a void, and they haven't a clue what the new year will bring. Journalists are doing their year-end perspective pieces, and (because New Years presents change) if it was a good year they look for what could go wrong. If it was a bad year they look for something that could bring improvement. Set all this against the huge run in Internet stocks, and you see the psychology at play. Anxiety, change (meaning down), etc.
