Lordy, your post is so chocked full of stuff that I'll probably forget half of it and mis-quote the rest (my apologies in advance).

Your ideas with regard to gift giving are of course note worthy. I think the crux of the subject is that it is essentially different for everybody.

You mentioned something about buying several of one item and giving them to several people. I, personally, would not do such a thing unless it was something I'd like to have for myself. I came to the conclusion a few years ago that the perfect gift is something which I could afford to buy and would want for myself, but would instead give to someone else. This, to me, sums up in a nutshell what a gift really is.

Your thoughts on consumable items as gifts is one which I exploit pretty much every year, and it is usually the same gift, tree-ripened oranges from Pittman & Davis. This particular item falls into the ultimate definition of gift for me because I absolutely love tree-ripened oranges, and by giving them to others qualifies as something I would like to have for myself. They are expensive when bought in smaller quantities, but the price comes down dramatically when ordered in a higher box count (of course this probably wouldn't be an appropriate gift for those living in states where oranges are grown, but that isn't the case where I live).

You said something about giving a gift to someone I may know quite a bit more about, as in listening throughout the year for hints as to what they may want and buying it in advance. Most of those to whom I give the oranges I don't really know well. They are the people that cut my hair, rent me video's, come over and do the simple tasks with the computer (which I just flat refuse to learn how to do) so I keep doing this or whatever, the person or person's at my favorite get 'n' go, my dentist (he deserves a big gift), and generally people of that nature. The people that you want to say in a special way, "Thanks, you really make being here in this place, at this point in my life, a more wonderful experience for me."

Of course, family and close friends are different. And I think deserve something a little more special. Unfortunately (as far as I'm concerned), the things which I would want to give to them require cash plain and simple. Even if I did have advance knowledge of something they might really like, how would I know they didn't go ahead and get it without me knowing it by Christmas?

Darn it, there was so much more I wanted to say which your post provoked, but am not the speed typist that you are.

Your thoughts on the subject were appreciated. Post them to me about two weeks before Christmas next year. I'll probably forget. :-)

Mike

Did SI lower the age limit which used to be 18 to become a member? Also, whats up with "(coffee shop)" after the name? I've seen this before, but can't figure out what the deal is. Is it that these members can only post in these places or something else?
