Tae, company coffee mugs and company labeled post-it notes etc are one of the oldest marketing techniques known. Virtually every company does something each year. This year the company I work at spent $600 on candy to put into hundreds of coffee mugs - boxes and boxes of mugs. We spent several thousand dollars on custom company-embroidered jackets, shirts, and hats. It took days to assemble the gifts into packages, and then several employees spent a day or two delivering these packages. As for holiday gifts received, we received dozens of expensive gift baskets from companies who do business with us, with any and everything represented: chocolates, caviar, wine, carbonated apple cider, summer sausage, cheeses, all manner of specialty crackers, and smoked salmon, including one whole smoked salmon. I didn't have to buy lunch for three days straight. :-) The leftovers after everyone had taken all they wanted home covered half of our conference table.

Company-labeled calendars, clothing, appointment books, etc is a whole industry in itself. So Amazon does this stuff too, and you say they are marketing geniuses? NOT.

I own retail jewelry stores. Whenever a customer buys a fine piece of jewelery, we give them a jar of jewelry cleaner with our name on it. I just do not feel like I am a genius doing that;-)

As a consumer yes, as an investor not!

AOL has hooks, AMZN, EGG, Buy.com does not.
