That would suggest that all EPS are
recalculated to (say) Sept 30.

Thanks Irish Paddy, I've done just that. You and HerbVic have
good points--I need to compare equivalent quarters, especially
in a seasonal industry.

The following chart compares the next four quarters (4Q) for each
of the boxmakers. Next4Q is their earnings over the next four
quarters, etc.

Name Price Last yr Next4Q BkwdP/E 4QPE 4QGrwth 4QPEG
Apple $40.94 $1.89 $2.48 21.66 16.51 31.22 0.69
Compaq $42.00 $0.53 $1.46 79.25 28.77 175.47 0.45
Dell $73.19 $0.95 $1.34 77.04 54.62 41.05 1.88
Gateway $51.19 $1.96 $2.53 26.12 20.23 29.08 0.90

Apple improves somewhat in this scenario. Compaq and Dell stay
roughly the same. Gateway slips.

The lower PEGs given to Apple and Compaq presumably reflect
investors' concerns for the companies--Apple's longterm ability
to continue to compete against Wintel, and Compaq's ability to
integrate DEC and avoid more channel-stuffing problems.
