Hi Fred, It sounds like I am trying to get set up simularto you,

>>I use Quote.Com Real Time charts and would like to keep this along with SI on one monitor, on the second 21" monitor I would like the Real Tick ECN from South West Securities. Is this possible with my system by simply installing a VGA splitter card or do I need to upgrade to Windows 98?>>>

I also use Quote.com charts in real time and want to view as many as posible at the same time, and on the other monitor want to switch between SI and DiscoverBrokerage.

Are you satisfied with Real Tick ? I'v been considering changing to another broker to get faster executions with options,

It was sugested that I switch to a pentium as my present computer is a 486 and I guess just not up to the required task.

Thanks
HG

I am not sure what you mean by a splitter card. If you mean a Y connector..NO. With a Y connector you will se the same image on both monitors. This could be useful if you want to set up a remote station.

You can use a dual monitor card. The dual monitor card will work in Win95, Win98 or NT. It will take up one PCI slot. This is the most expensive option. It could be the only option in some setups if PCI slots are limited.

Appian appiantech.com , STB stbmvp.com and ColorGraphics colorgfx.com have multimonitor cards. While checking the link I see Colorgraphics now has an AGP multimonitor card.

Matrox also had a card in the works. I do not know the current status.

Win98 has native multimonitor suport. You can install multiple single video cards and Win98 provides the multimonitor support. The trick here is to find the compatible cards. There are a lot but not all will work. Search this thread for multimonitors for additional details. Some of the older posts are indexed here home.att.net

NT does not have native support for multimonitors (looks line 5 does/will). If you want multimonitors in NT you need the support on the card. Matrox cards have support for multimonitor cards in NT.

Also, where can I purchase monitors and components reasonably?

Check Pricewatch pricewatch.com to get a feel for prices.
Check resellerratings.com for reseller ratings

Mushkin for RAM mushkin.com

Harddrives Tjt tjt.com and Dirt Cheap drives dirtcheapdrives.com

Check ESC for misc components whatisnew.com

There are good deals on monitor refurbs from Viewsonic and others. The deals are often reported on this thread.

Fred,

killerapp.com is also a GREAT place to check prices. They are almost always THE lowest I ever find (great hard drive link ZP). Matrox does have both two ($450-MSR $500) and four ($600-MSR$700) port cards. The new Colorgraphics line is not fully out until Feb. but looks promising.
As far as monitor recommendations I have been using a CTX-VL950 19"
wich has, to my eye, a great picture and can be found at killerapp.com for $410 (once you have 19" you never go back).

If you will be satisfied with two monitors (or maybe three depending on how many open PCI slots you have) two single vid cards is by far the way to go. And a general consensus, myself heartily included, is that you can do no better than Matrox. If however you have a shortage of slots or you want four monitors, multi monitor cards are becoming more and more reasonable, the Matrox four port at $150 per port.
This is surely going to get better and better for us as more strong companies continue in this market and the ranks of Day-traders grows.
In three years we will look back on the days of multiple single cards and shake our heads chuckling (I certainly hope so).

ZP, great post, full of links and facts. Just the way I like 'em.
