Could the answer be as simple as
they were just more efficient at flooding the market with CD's and Disks, and once
people sign up, they never leave because they are too lazy to try another service?

tonyt,

I honestly do not have a clue nor do I really agree. The only answer I have is that AOL made accessing the net easy. There are a lot of people out there that really have clue how their computers work. Therefore, AOL provided a disk that would self configure even to the local POP and all one had to do was provide a charge card number and a password. I have a feeling I will get some flaming on this one. I am actually long AOL with covered calls at 150. The reason is, it keeps going up???
