Ah well- I completely agree with you that it is more likely than not that our increasing knowledge is NOT a sign of the second coming. But we have advanced our wisdom and ethics because many of us now ACKNOWLEDGE and understand the root of our instincts- and understanding the dangerous impulses in our collective characters is part way to solving the problems they cause. At no time in the history of humanity, I think, have we been more concerned about the welfare of "others"- globally, not merely because we wish to convert them, or subjugate them, but because we wish everyone on the planet to be fed and clothed and to live lives free of torture and pain. This type of world good will is a novel thing I think. Your concern, for example, about the workers in the Nike plant is a case in point. In the middle ages would a common person have been concerned about the life of anyone anywhere outside their small village? Life was hard, starvation always near, difficult to care much about anything except food, propagation, and the promise of a future life free from the hardships of the material world. But we have the leisure to be globally compassionate- that in itself is a fantastic evolution. Our compassion is not, as yet, channeled very effectively - but if it evolves, and develops- then I would argue we ARE making great strides in our moral and social development. The complete breakdown of tribalism will be a great thing.

Christine,

I guess it would be best to view my post as an answer to Bob's, in which he believed
that our increase in knowledge is a sign that the Second Coming is about to happen. I
think it is much more complex than that, particularly because vast areas of the earth still
live in primitive conditions, and also because we may be closer to a new dark ages
rather than an enlightenment, because man's basic instincts and more primitive behaviors
have not evolved at the same rate as our scientific discoveries.

Well we agree on something but we are calling it by different names. What you are describing is man's sin nature coming out time and again down through the ages causing them to do evil deeds. We cannot evolve out of that condition, we can only be translated out of it by being born again to a new nature given by God. But even then for the time being we still have to exist in these old bodies of sin because it is our spirit that benefits from the experience, not our flesh.

I am sorry I cannot answer all of your questions right now. I am very busy for the next week with work also. I will do what I can when I have time.

cya,

Bob
