Yep... It ain't easy to find cooperation in a Confederacy. Look at early US history under the Articles of Confederation and how states were competing against one another unfairly through tax structures and interstate tariffs.

What Europe is about to discover is that is not easy to be the global "top dog" currency. With that role comes the responsibility and sacrifice, combined with the political will to maintain its pre-eminence in the face of adverse economic impacts. Personally, I don't think they have it in them to pull it off without knocking some heads together and undermining the long-held parochial interests each member state represent.

Personally, a cheaper US dollar will assist in relieving pressure in the trade deficit. There may be some potential negatives in the Dollar/Euro rivalry, but I think Europe will bear the brunt of them as they find cheaper US goods competing with their domestic ones.

Watch for protectionism though. European thinking seems to rely heavily upon tariffs and subsidies when faced with threats to their inefficient business sectors.

May we live in interesting times.

Regards,

Ron
