Cybergrrls To Soon Outnumber Geekguys - AT&T, ivillage to launch women's Web service

NEW YORK, Nov 18 (Reuters) - AT&T Corp. and iVillage, the
No. 1 women's network on the Web, said Wednesday they have
entered a two-year, $5.0 million deal to launch a U.S. Internet
service tailored specifically for women.
The companies said recent reports show the number of women
using the Web is soaring and women are set to outnumber men on
the Internet by early next century.
New York-based AT&T will provide the Internet link to the
new service, to be known as iVillage Online.
The service will be available in early January and AT&T
will charge users $14.95 per month to gain 150 hours access to
the Internet portal.
Portals, the entry points of most visitors to the Internet,
have taken center stage in the Internet economy. They provide
connection fees for communications companies and advertising
and other revenues for service providers.
IVillage.com(www.ivillage.com) has content tailored to
issues affecting women and has seen use rise to more than 75
million page views per month.
A recent survey by Jupiter Communications survey, shows
women account for more than 45 percent of users overall, and on
track to outnumber men within four years. Four years ago, women
made up only 5 percent of Internet users, according to the
Jupiter survey.
AT&T and iVillage will launch an advertising blitz to
provide people with the software necessary to get onto the
iVillage service.
AT&T has recently done similar Internet service deals with
technology companies like Yahoo!, Excite Inc., Infoseek Corp.
and Lycos Inc.
