<<Why does AOL get into portal business? Because it sees revenue (additional revenue). If YHOO now has the follower advantage, why do you assume YHOO will not be profitable ? AOL just bought NSCP for their NetCenter. They continue to use MSFT browser. If an expenditure of 4 b can be justified for NetCenter, why can't YHOO justify its "potential" ?>> See that's a good example. AOL bought Netscape, whose Netcenter site generates more revenue than Yahoo, plus they own the Netscape browser, (they own the software) all for 4 billion. Yahoo is already at 30 Billion. According to some of the rating services, ( 100hot.com) Netscape leads over Yahoo in the amount of users. See the problem? << But the services are great. Half an hour ago, I made reservations for formal friends, at a restaurant I did not know about, and YHOO helped me do that. Yellow pages does not provide that level and sophistication and service. And yellow pages does not give me finance news, international news etc all rolled into one package.>> There are 1,000 of sites on the web that do all those things. As the web grows, so do the number of sites. This isn't like TV that had a limited number of broadcast stations. <<Its not how many people - its how many advertisers are needed. Advertisers love people. And YHOO has the best model to lure people.>. The advertisers are charged based on the number of page views. So the number of users is important. They don't just pay to be on Yahoo. They per per impression. <<Do you think AOL would be missed if they stopped their operations ? I could say that about MSFT/CSCO, but AOL ? All internets are in their embryonic stages. None of them will be missed. People haven't formed habits - not yet. And that is why leadership at this stage is important.>> Are you kidding? When AOL went down for 12 hours it was a major news event. Even when AOL has gone down for a few hours its news. So yes, it's missed. When AOL had connection problems various States filed suits against AOL. To many people AOL IS the internet. They will never use an ISP.
