Vikings Jake Reed Spent Extra Time in Select Comfort Air Bed to Prepare for Playoffs
Reed Credits Rapid Recovery to Sack -- of a Different Kind
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Minnesota Viking Jake Reed may have been watching from the sidelines for more than a month, but on Sunday, he'll be back on the field ready to pay a visit to the Arizona Cardinals' end zone.

The Vikings wide receiver, who underwent back surgery six weeks ago to repair a herniated lumbar disk, returned to practice two weeks ago and credits his speedy recovery to the time he spent in bed -- more specifically, on an adjustable air bed sent to him by a local company.

''Select Comfort sent me one of their air beds to help me recover from my back surgery,'' said Reed. ''Since I've started sleeping on the Select Comfort bed, I feel great and I'm convinced that if I were sleeping on my old bed, I wouldn't be coming back to play this year. I sleep much better and I have no pain.''

Minneapolis-based Select Comfort, the national leader in air bed technology, responded to Reed's condition by offering him a bed to ensure a restful rehabilitation. ''We'll do everything we can to keep the team's players healthy and playing their best. Doesn't everyone want to see their home team win to the Super Bowl?'' Rob Hawthorne, president and CEO of Select Comfort.

Head Viking Athletic Trainer Fred Zamberletti noted that ''Jake's recovery has been remarkable and sleeping on the air bed made him more comfortable. He was able to get the rest he needed to recover. He looks great in practice and we are thrilled to have him healthy again and ready for the playoffs.''

Select Comfort came to Reed's rescue with its high-technology air beds that conform to the body, relieve aches and help reduce the pressure points which cause tossing and turning. In a 1997 research study, 93% of low back pain sufferers reported significant relief after sleeping in a Select Comfort bed. With a handheld control, sleepers select their personalized firmness level on each side of the bed.

Select Comfort is working with athletic trainers and players throughout the NFL, including the Carolina Panthers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and others, to determine if the company's air bed can reduce pain and increase players' quality of sleep as a first step in enhancing their overall performance. ''We're interested in exploring the relationship between sleep and athletic performance,'' said Hawthorne. ''Based on what we've learned so far from players and trainers, better sleep can make a huge difference in overall performance.''

Select Comfort's products are sold through national direct marketing operations and more than 260 company-owned retail stores nationwide. More than 1 million people sleep on Select Comfort air beds.
