Computer Stores: Endangered?
More and more customers are buying direct or from Web-based stores.

Used to be that no one would dream of buying a big-ticket item like a computer system without seeing it in the showroom and kicking its tires--so to speak. But in this day of virtual showrooms and burgeoning direct and Web-based sales, that scenario is headed the way of the dinosaur. In "Are Store-Bought PCs an Endangered Species?" in the upcoming February 1999 issue of PC World, we examine the growing trend of even traditionally store-bought brands moving toward Web-based and direct sales.

Everybody knows that companies like Dell, Gateway, and Micron have been making direct-sales hay for years now. But you may not know that companies whose PCs you're used to seeing only in big computer outlets and consumer electronics stores have quietly been selling an increasingly larger share of their products via phone order and over the Web. Meanwhile, a disproportionately large number of the contenders on our Power, Budget, and Home PCs charts are brands that are directly sold.

For more information and specifics on the trend toward direct and Web-based computer sales, see "Are Store-Bought PCs an Endangered Species?" in the upcoming February 1999 issue of PC World.
