Flash memory will remain oversupplied for most of 1999, although ASPs have fallen as far as
possible, suppliers said. After witnessing 45% price erosion in 1998, Silicon Storage Technology
Inc. next year will raise tags across its older product lines and transition most of its customers to
new low-cost parts by May, said Derek Best, vice president of sales and marketing for the
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based flash-memory and module supplier.

The new parts, using finer process geometries, will be cheaper to manufacture, thus allowing the
company to once again realize gross-profit margins. "We can't continue to supply a market that's
costing us money," Best said.
