Nicholas,

The MACD I use for that is the standard default setting you get on most TA programs. The quicker ones may whipsaw you into too early an entry and the longer ones may get you in at the top of a short term breakout that would need to pull back a bit before resuming. The 89, 3, 5/MACD combo signal is normally good for nailing the beginning range of a 4 to 6 month trend.
