Hi Lynn - Check out last month's Wired Magazine. There is an article that discusses the next generation set top box I believe designed by General Instruments (it might be Scientific Atlantic??). It shows the complete board lay out and points out some of the components that are presently in the first generation design. I was surprised to see that there is a SPARC chip that makes up the brains of the box. It has a powerful JVM embedded in the ROM that will drive the other computing functions.

My impression was that this machine probably could have been classified as a smart workstation (or a high end computer) several years ago. Because of (1) reduced component cost and increased component performance (2) miniaturization (3) high volume production quantities and (4) Moore's law....; a very powerful, yet compact machine is schedule for end-user delivery by early 2000.

How SUNW integrates these boxes with the cable companies, ISPs (AOL, GTE and SUNW may be working on something here),emerging xDSL options, and combined with both JAVA and JINI driven utilities will provide SUNW (and the industry) another platform for users to interact on the Internet. The next three years for SUNW will see excellent "new" growth when these set-top-boxes begin to hit the market (World wide!).

EKS

P.S. I noticed in BARRON's financial stock tables that SUNW's 1999 consensus earnings have increased to $3.31! Also I SUNW is ranked 28 with the largest NASDAQ short interest with 9,062,557 shares (as of December 15, 1998) but down 13.5% from the November 13, 1998 level. SUNW's short interest represent less than 1-day to cover based on the average daily trading volume which is considered very small.
