Go back to the link you posted and click on "Table - Monthly" at the bottom to see the actual prices in table form.

You will see that GTW hit a pre-split price of 66.25 in December of 1996 which is where I took my 33 1/8 price from. If you use the close in December 1996, you still start with a base of about 26 3/4, and therefore still have less than 100% appreciation to the close in 1998.

If you want to take the average of stock price 1996, then you should include part of 1996's EPS growth which was almost 50% for the year. GTW's growth has obviously slowed from 1996, including the 1997 write-off. But the stock price growth is not as radical as you would like to paint.
