Too much grime already. No i am not defending him but i am saying that past is not future actions.

Darleen,

I can understand how we all can get fed up with this scandal.

However, imagine the problems that foreign analysts and journalists have in determining what this country stands for and how our leaders will react to the inevitable crises that arise. They have to peer into character profiles dating back decades to better understand what drives the actions of our president (we do the same psychological analysis of foreign leaders).

It is very difficult for them to decide whether military and political actions are being as a sign of the long-term US interest and foreign policies, or whether they are merely the short-term actions of a man desperately trying to justify why he should remain in office.

In foreign relations, credibility is everything. Credibility and belief that we will not waiver in our policies toward opponents and allies, nor sacrifice them on the altar of political expediency.

Unfortunately, recent bombing attacks against Iraq were conducted in such an truncated way, that it is inevitable that they would be construed as the actions of a politically wounded "animal". So now we suffer through the humiliation of having our Baghdad Bad Boy claim that he was victimized by Operation "Monica"/"Free Willy".

Hussein has won the propaganda battle and it will be even more difficult for this administration to justify future pre-emptive strikes or to undermine the Iraqi gov't. Thus the conduct of US Foreign policy will be hampered, and other opponents like N. Korea, will now find the gumption to exert their own challenges to US interests.

That is why the president's pecadillos are pertinent. They have undermined the authority and international respect for the office of the presidency and the power and prestige that signifies and commands.

Regards,

Ron
