The pros and cons for the telco and equipment maker sector by Jubek:

8. The bandwidth boom
Upside: In the near term, advances in technology are increasing the number of channels available for transmitting data: cable, wireless, satellite, digital service via conventional phone lines. This means more competition and, presumably, lower prices per byte of information transmitted. The new technologies lead to the creation of new industries, new jobs, new IPOs and new billionaires.

Downside: Confusion, duplication of effort, huge investments in dead-end technologies, are all symptoms of discontinuous change. Today's competitive environment is reminiscent of the days in the early part of the century when every local phone company had its own set of wires. Sorting out the winners and losers among technologies and providers will take years.
