You have convinced me they don't want to run a cable company. However, acquiring a couple of small cable companies to develop and test new software (and experiment with new services) may not be that bad. I think they had been frusturated by TCI (i think) about the digital set-tops because cable companies have openly stated that they don't want MSFT to be the dominant software company in the cable business (this may be why they are considering acquisitions).
I guess that MSFT has to position themselves if digital set tops become an alternative to PCs - especially for internet only users. I don't know if the set tops will allow internet access.

I don't know the status of AOL and other ISPs trying to get access to cable lines to offer high speed service. IF anyone knows, please let us know.

> Microsoft has a firm grasp of what its core competency is - writing software. I wouldn't be suprised at more "seed" investments to help accelerate the adoption of cable modems, digital set-tops, etc., but Microsoft has no interest in running a cable company.

Have you overlooked the fact that cable companies wish to become part of the internet infrastructure and also wish to participate in e-commerce. Of course, MSFT is interested in cable companies. Its cheaper than buying a phone company. <g>
