Actually, re: ORCL, they started shipping a LINUX version of their database (or at least announced it), right about the time their stock started rising steadily....

They announced the microkernal several weeks later.

The Linux effort is amazing.

Don't underestimate these folks. I installed LinuxPPC for the first time yesterday (one of my Xmas break "to do's"), and it is quite simply amazing that a group of hobiest could produce something this slick.

I'm not too terriblbly thrilled with the KDE GUI (too many bad design flaws copied from Windows--the KDE groups should really pick up a copy of Apple's Guide to Human Interface), but otherwise it seems really slick. In interface form, it reminds me a lot of my NT workstation at work (bad thing), but it seemed a helluva lot snappier.

As of now, Linux seems to be best suited for (fire and forget) web servers. But at the rate they're going (and if they can get a better GUI crew), they could start to make some serious inroad into the desktop market.

I hope AAPL tries to make OSX compatible with Linux. Apple as already financed the MkLinux project, and has apperently submitted a proposal for a Unix binary standard. If Apple can make OSX work will with Linux, then that will be a very good thing (tm).

P.S. Although I now have Linux on an external HD, I'm honestly not sure what to do with it. It was fun to play with, but it doesn't yet have a good enough UI or app base to replace 8.5 for 99.9% of my work.
