'CUSTOMERS KEPT IN THE Y2K DARK

Banks, utilities and airlines are keeping customers in the dark about their contingency plans for the millennium, should millennium-related computer failures crop up, according to the Consumers' Association.

The consumer watchdog contacted 74 companies, posing as a worried customer, and asking for details of contingency plans and customer's rights.

A third of the companies did not respond, and of those that did, many provided "only patchy answers".
