Japan down hard.

TOKYO (Reuters) - The benchmark Nikkei average
of Tokyo stocks tumbled more than 3 percent by
midday on Monday in a shortened first trading day of
1999, amid concerns that the yen's growing strength
against the dollar would hurt Japan's ailing economy.
At the close, the Nikkei 225 average was off
426.28 points, or 3.08 percent, at 13,415.89. Nikkei
December futures fell 310 to 13,390.
